Inspired by the overlap of her gold line-work with that used by Japanese master artisans working on gold kimono embellishments, Leonie trained with a third-generation gold embellishment artisan in Kyoto.
Known as kingukuri, there are several gold embellishment techniques practiced to bring different styles and character to the subject. Originally gold leaf was used for everything, but that got modernised to a more frequent use of pastes incorporating metal powders instead, especially for fine line-work. Kimonos on which these rich patterning techniques were applied were restricted to the stage, or the very well-to-do.
The most simple, non-traditional embellishment application in this series is using metallic pens to echo the traditional artisanal techniques. This modern version is the current technique available for these works. However, her practice is developing beyond this into using the traditional metal-powder pastes and gold leaf. Works with this will be released in the future.
All prints are printed on high-quality, Hahnemuhle paper. Paper choice depends on the print and print colour. Please contact the artist to discuss.
