Background Information: Lotus – 蓮 – Hasu is the earliest photograph in the series, taken in Kamakura in 2015, when the artist was attending a summer programme at the University of Tokyo.

In Japan and throughout buddhism, the lotus is strongly symbolic of spiritual growth and enlightenment, as the lotus grows in muddy waters but comes out clean. Both the karakami print and the photograph contain the flower, the bud and the leaves.

The karakami print is also called “Hasu”. It depicts not quite a lotus, but a flower inspired by the lotus and peony.

Both flowers hold meaning for the artist, whose name in English sounds like peony. However, the lotus holds even greater meaning as the artist’s chosen Chinese/Japanese name includes the lotus, and whose western call-name as a child referenced its smaller sister, the lily.
